Installing DHCP needs some prerequisites like there should be a working DNS, Active Directory in the environment. To validate your DNS server, click Start, click Run, type cmd, press ENTER, type ping “name of the DNS Server Name”, and then press ENTER. An unsuccessful reply generates an “Unknown Host DNS server name” message.
To install the DHCP Service on an existing Windows 2008 Server:
- Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager

- Double-click Roles, and then click Add Roles.

- Click Next, Then Check DHCP Server, Then Click Next and then again Next.

- Check the name of the domain and ip settings and click Next, check if you require WINS SERVER and enter ip setting for the WINS SERVER else click Next.

- Click Next as we can configure the DHCP server later (which I will explain in my next post)
- Check Enable DHCPv6 stateless mode for this server if you like to enable IPv6 and repeat step 4, else check Disable DHCPv6 stateless mode for this server and click Next

- Enter the administrator credentials as required and then click Next.
- Check the configuration settings and click Install to finish the installation.

Note: The Steps are applicable for earlier versions of windows servers also( Windows Server 2000, Windows Server 2003).
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
